Dr. Luiz Antonio Santini, MD, is Director-General of the National Cancer Institute of the Ministry of Health (INCA/MS) since 2005. Under his administration, INCA implemented a new institutional technical scientific model and started the building of a new campus.

Prior to joining INCA, much of Santini´s work was conducted in clinical education by leading the School of Medicine of Fluminense Federal University (UFF) from which he graduated in 1970 and did his two year Residency Training in General Surgery. In 1978 he completed a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery.

He was Executive Director for three terms of the Brazilian Association of Medical Education (ABEM) and served as visiting professor at the MBA Course in Health, at Coppead, in Federal University of Rio de Janeiro(UFRJ).

Santini has authored and co-authored many publications on general surgery, thoracic surgery,health, administration and planning.

Due to his regional leadership he was appointed as Coordinator of the Latin American Network of National Cancer Institutes (RINC) – an initiative organized under the auspices of the Union of the South American Nations – and implemented a successful model for aligning public cancer prevention and control actions in the region.

Santini was elected three times UICC´s Board Member and represents Brazil at IARC´s Governing Council.

In 2009 he was nominated by the Ministry of Health the Coordinator for Brazil at the US-Latin American Cancer Research Network.
